Over
the past few years, soft plastic lures have gained increasing favor among
Muskie anglers. Probably the best known among the soft plastic lures is the Bull Dawg.
The
Bull Dawg is an un-gamely looking lure. It has a jig head imbedded in its soft
plastic body and has a trailing tail of plastic material that wiggles and
twists as the lure moves in the water.
The
Bull Dawg is designed to be a subsurface lure and literally comes alive in the
water as the angler retrieves it by short jerks, twitches or a steady slow
retrieve. When used in fishing for suspended fish, it can be counted down at
about one foot per second, allowing it to be put t in the fish’s face at any
depth.
Many
anglers do not like the weight of these lures...the 6" is 1.5 ounces,
9" is 3 ounces and the 12" is 6 ounces. The lures demand a little
different approach to rod, reel and line because of their weight.
Bull
Dawg also make a version called the Shallow Bull Dawg for those who want to
jerk the lure over sub-surface weed or shallow rock bars.
New
from Bull Dawg is a little number called the Twin Fin. you can see from the
picture below why they gave it that name.

The Twin Fin is approximately 10" long and
weighs 4 ounces. It is a soft plastic, double-tail lure that can be
cranked, jerked or jigged. It runs from 8 to 12 feet below the surface
on a steady, medium-speed retrieve. The extra large twisting-action tails
never stop moving, even on the drop, making it a visible target.
Once again, the weight of the lure will require
a heavier rod and line along with a solid reel.
The Shallow Dawg soft plastic is available from
Jackson Lures at reasonable prices. Early season would be an excellent
opportunity to try your hand at some soft plastic presentation.
