Globes
are a family of lures that that have been around for over twenty years. Probably
the most well known of the globes is the old Pfluger yellowbird. For many years,
yellow was the color of choice among Musky anglers and the yellowbird was
"The" lure. The story goes that someone called into a radio fishing
show and said that he colored his Yellowbird black and caught more fish
and had more follows than he ever had with the yellowbird. Ever since then,
there has been a proliferation of globe colors.
And then came Frenchy LaMay...Frenchy revolutionized the
configuration of globes. In addition to some very unique color patterns, Frenchy
backed out the screws holding the blade to the head. This created a unique metallic
sound and stirred up the water in a way that had not been done before.
During the late 80's and early 90's, interest in globe
manufacturing diminished. Frenchy had raised the bar on quality and performance
and it was not profitable to make a lure to compete on that level.
In
1996, after about six months of correspondence with Frenchy on all aspects of
globe manufacture, I began to manufacture "The Best American Globe".
The globe hen came in two colors (Black and Yellow), and had a unique blade and body
arrangement that gave the lure extreme performance flexibility. The lure worked
well in calm or chop and produced different sound characteristics depending upon
the speed at which it was retrieved. I only made 100 of these in 1996 and they
sold out in a matter of weeks.
The success of "The Best American Globe" sparked
others to re-enter the market with their versions. To this day, no globe since
1996 has matched the consistent performance of "The Best American
Globe". In 2004, I ended production of "The Best American
Globe". For the 2010 Musky season I am again making the Best American Globe in
limited quantities with a return to the classic color patterns that are
responsible for many surface bait success stories as well as two other
patterns, wounded critter and rainbow..
